I wasn’t there for anything paranormal.
I was in New Orleans for work, and the hotel was booked for me. I didn’t even know it had a reputation until after I got home.
It was late when I checked in. One of those long travel days where everything starts to blur together. The lobby was beautiful, but crowded, and I didn’t really take it in. I just wanted to get upstairs.
The room felt normal.
Clean. Quiet. A little older, but in a way that felt intentional. I remember dropping my bag, kicking off my shoes, and sitting on the edge of the bed for a minute before getting up to shower.
Nothing felt off.
After that, I got into bed, turned off the lights, and put something on my phone to fall asleep to. I don’t even remember what it was. I just remember drifting in and out.
At some point, I woke up.
No reason. No sound that I can recall. Just that sudden awareness that you’re awake.
I stayed still for a second, trying to figure out why.
That’s when I felt it.
The mattress shifted.
Not slightly. Not like the building settling or something underneath it. It felt like a weight. Like someone had just sat down on the edge of the bed.
Right behind me.
I didn’t move right away.
I told myself it was nothing. That I was half asleep and misinterpreting it. That the bed was just adjusting, or I had shifted without realizing.
But then it happened again.
A second, smaller movement. Like whoever — or whatever — it was had adjusted their position.
That’s when I turned.
There was no one there.
The room was exactly how I left it. Door closed. Lights off. No movement.
I sat up and turned on the lamp.
I checked everything. The bathroom. The closet. Even the door handle, just to make sure it was still locked.
It was.
I remember standing there for a minute, just looking at the bed.
Trying to recreate the feeling.
Sitting down in the same spot.
Nothing matched it.
I told myself it was a dream. That it had to be. That’s the easiest explanation, and the one I stuck with at the time.
I turned the light off and got back into bed.
But I didn’t fall asleep right away.
I kept waiting for it to happen again.
It didn’t.
Eventually, I must have fallen asleep, because the next thing I remember was my alarm going off.
Morning made it feel smaller.
Less real.
I went about my day, checked out, and didn’t think much about it. If anything, I was a little annoyed with myself for getting worked up over something so easy to explain away.
It wasn’t until later that someone mentioned the hotel.
They said, “Oh, that place is supposed to be really haunted.”
And I remember thinking… of course it is.
I didn’t tell them what happened right away. I didn’t want to feed into it.
But when I looked it up later, I saw other people describe something similar.
Not the same story. Not identical details.
Just that same feeling of someone being in the room… without ever seeing anyone.
And that’s the part I can’t fully shake.
If it had just been a sound, I’d forget it.
If I had seen something, I’d question it.
But it wasn’t either of those.
It was physical.
It was specific.
And it felt like someone sat down… like they belonged there.
